MTN to invest $1bn in Nigeria

MTN would spend more than $1 billion (R8.1bn) in 2012 to improve its network in Nigeria, says Akinwale Goodluck, the spokesman for MTN's Nigerian unit.

"The investment will relieve congestion and improve the quality of the network," he said. It would be directed toward 2G and 3G technologies, MTN's core network and power generators to run transmission stations, Goodluck said.

Nigeria's telecoms regulator said last year that it would prevent the three cellular operators in the country from adding customers until their services improved. MTN spent $1bn on its network last year. - Bloomberg
